Maintain temperatures between 18°C - 24°C. Avoid draughts as these can create undesirable temperature fluctuations. Consider giving your plant an occasional misting twice every week to maintain the optimum humidity level.
Provide fertilizer once the first true leaves emerge. The first set of leaves that appear are known as the seed leaves. The second set of leaves are the first ‘true leaves,’ and a sign that your plant is getting mature and ready for serious growth. Dilute a balanced fertilizer to ¼ the strength recommended. Fertilize once in 2 weeks.
Just one of the many members of the summer squash family, zucchini is a fair representation of the qualities we love about these fruits. Thin skins, versatile flavors, tender flesh, and bold colors are just a few of the reasons why gardeners across the United States are in love with every kind of summer squash. Also known as “scalloped squash,” these small, spaceship-shaped fruits are best enjoyed when they’re no larger than 5 inches across.
You can start squash by seed directly in the garden once all danger of frost has passed. The seeds can also be planted indoors in 3" or 4" pots a few weeks earlier. All squash resent having their roots disturbed, so if you're starting the plants anywhere other than right in the garden, take care to ensure the root ball does not fall apart while planting. The advantage to starting seeds in pots is twofold: You start the season with larger plants and you put out plants that are less vulnerable to striped cucumber beetles.
