Coconuts can float on water across oceans for several months until they reach the new ground to create roots and grow because the seedling developing inside the coconut feeds on the coconut water and coconut meat provided.Coconuts grow at the top of large palms (up to 30m tall), with 4 to 6m long, evergreen, feather-like leaves. The palm starts producing coconuts after about 6 years and becomes most productive by the age of 15 to 20 years.
Water the coconut tree frequently. Coconut palms are very cold sensitive. If you live in an area that gets cold, your coconut plant will need to come inside for the winter. Provide supplemental light and keep it away from drafts. In the summer, grow it outdoors and make sure you place it in a very sunny and warm spot.Growing coconut palms are heavy feeders that require regular, complete fertilizer. Look for a fertilizer that provides both the basic nutrients plus trace nutrients like boron, manganese and magnesium.
