Plant Care

Watering

During summer, Water daily or when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. During Winter season water once in 2 days or when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. Keep the soil lightly moist at all times, but do not overwater as this will cause brown spots and leaf drop. Curly or dry leaves suggest, the plant is dry and needs watering. Water in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Always check your soil before watering.

Light

During summer season keep the plants in shaded area and during winter season plants can withstand direct/indirect light.

Temperature

During summer season or when the temperature is above 45°C place the plant in shaded area. During winter season or the when the temperature is below 45°C the plants can be directly placed in direct/indirect sunlight.

Fertilizer

Apply liquid fertilizer or slow release fertilizer once in 15 days. Always fertilizer the plants during the morning hours when the temperature is low. For best results use Folikraft ready to use Outdoor Plant Food / Flower Booster.

Plant Bio

Carissa grandiflora 'Prostrata', commonly known as Natal Plum 'Prostrata', is a low-growing, spreading shrub that belongs to the Apocynaceae family. It is native to South Africa and is appreciated for its glossy, dark green foliage and fragrant white flowers. Here is a description and care guide for Carissa grandiflora 'Prostrata':

Description:

Size: 'Prostrata' is a compact shrub that typically grows up to 1 to 2 feet (0.3 to 0.6 meters) in height and spreads up to 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters) wide. It has a prostrate or low-growing habit, creating a dense mat of foliage.
Leaves: The leaves of Carissa grandiflora 'Prostrata' are leathery, oval-shaped, and have a glossy, dark green color. They are arranged opposite each other along the stems and may have small spines along the leaf edges.
Flowers: 'Prostrata' produces fragrant, star-shaped white flowers with a waxy texture. The flowers have a sweet fragrance and typically bloom in spring or summer. Following the flowers, small red fruits may develop, adding ornamental value to the plant.

Care:

Sunlight: Carissa grandiflora 'Prostrata' thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to promote healthy growth and flowering. However, it can tolerate some shade, particularly in hot climates.

Soil: Provide well-draining soil for 'Prostrata'. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy or loamy soils. The soil should be fertile and rich in organic matter. Ensure that the soil drains well, as the plant is susceptible to root rot in overly moist conditions.

Watering: 'Prostrata' has moderate water requirements. Water the plant regularly during the growing season, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter or during cooler months, but do not let the soil completely dry out.

Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to provide nutrients to the plant. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the application rate. Alternatively, you can use a general-purpose liquid fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.

Pruning: 'Prostrata' generally requires minimal pruning. However, you can trim or prune the plant to maintain its shape and remove any dead, damaged, or overgrown branches. Pruning can be done after flowering or in early spring.

Pests and diseases: 'Prostrata' is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, it can occasionally be affected by aphids, scale insects, or mealybugs. Regularly inspect the plant for any signs of infestation and treat with appropriate insecticides if necessary.

Cold protection: Carissa grandiflora 'Prostrata' is sensitive to freezing temperatures. If you live in a colder climate, provide protection during frost or freeze events by covering the plant with a frost cloth or moving it to a sheltered location.

'Prostrata' is a versatile and attractive plant that can be used as ground cover, in borders, or as a container plant. Its glossy foliage, fragrant flowers, and ornamental fruits make it a popular choice for gardens. With proper care, including adequate sunlight, well-draining soil, and regular watering, you can enjoy the beauty of Carissa grandiflora 'Prostrata' in your landscape.
