Plant Care

Watering

During summer, Water daily or when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. During Winter season water once in 2 days or when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. Keep the soil lightly moist at all times, but do not overwater as this will cause brown spots and leaf drop. Curly or dry leaves suggest, the plant is dry and needs watering. Water in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Always check your soil before watering.

Light

During summer season keep the plants in shaded area and during winter season plants can withstand direct/indirect light.

Temperature

During summer season or when the temperature is above 45°C place the plant in shaded area. During winter season or the when the temperature is below 45°C the plants can be directly placed in direct/indirect sunlight.

Fertilizer

Apply liquid fertilizer or slow release fertilizer once in 15 days. Always fertilizer the plants during the morning hours when the temperature is low. For best results use Folikraft ready to use Outdoor Plant Food / Flower Booster.

Plant Bio

Japanese Mint, scientifically known as Mentha arvensis, is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae). Here's a description and care guide for Japanese Mint:

Description:

Foliage: Mentha arvensis has dark green, serrated leaves that are slightly hairy and emit a strong, minty fragrance when crushed. The leaves grow opposite each other on square-shaped stems.

Height: It typically reaches a height of about 1-2 feet (30-60 centimeters) but can vary depending on growing conditions.

Flowering: Japanese Mint produces small, inconspicuous whitish or pale purple flowers in terminal spikes during the summer months. However, it's often grown for its foliage rather than its flowers.

Care Guide:

Light: Japanese Mint prefers partial to full sunlight. Provide at least 4-6 hours of sunlight per day. It can also tolerate some shade.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry. Ensure adequate drainage to prevent root rot.

Soil: Plant Japanese Mint in well-draining soil with good fertility. A rich, loamy soil amended with organic matter works well. Growing it in containers is also a feasible option.

Fertilization: Mint generally doesn't require heavy feeding. You can add organic compost or a balanced fertilizer during the growing season to provide nutrients.

Pruning: Regularly prune or harvest Japanese Mint to encourage bushier growth and prevent it from becoming too leggy. Pinching off the tips of stems or harvesting leaves regularly helps maintain its vigor.

Propagation: Japanese Mint can be propagated through stem cuttings or division. It's beneficial to propagate mint every few years to maintain its health and vigor.

Pest and Disease Management: Mint is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, it can occasionally face issues with common pests like aphids or spider mites. Keep an eye on the plant and treat any problems promptly.

Japanese Mint is valued for its strong minty aroma and is commonly used in culinary dishes, herbal teas, aromatherapy, and medicinal applications. By providing proper care, adequate sunlight, regular watering, and occasional feeding, you can grow a healthy and fragrant Japanese Mint plant in your garden or containers. Be mindful of its spreading nature and consider containing it in a pot to control its growth.
