Product Bio

The easiest way to propagate a royal poinciana tree is by planting seeds rather than attempting to grow it from a cutting. Best of all, you don’t have to be a master gardener to have success germinating the seeds, which will eventually grow into this flashy tree.

Soak the seeds in a container of warm water for a day or two before planting. The University of Arizona suggests scarifying, or scratching or cutting, the seeds to speed up germination, as doing so allows water to enter the hard outer seed shell to stimulate the germination process. Simply nick the outer shell with scissors or a knife.

Once you’ve removed the seeds from the water and scarified them, immediately plant them in a 4- to 6-inch draining container of moist, well-drained potting mix. Plant each seed about an inch deep. Place the container in an outdoor location that's warm and in partial shade.

Keep the soil of your planted flame tree seedpods moist but not soggy, and germination should occur in around a week, according to Desert Tropicals. Although mature trees have a high tolerance to drought, while the seedlings are developing, water them regularly when the top inch of soil becomes dry. Always water until you see it run from the bottom drain holes.

Once the fast-growing seedlings start developing some size to them, you’ll have to transplant them into a larger container, so they don’t become root bound.
