Kochia (Kochia scoparia), also known as burning bush or summer cypress, is a hardy annual known for its lush foliage and vibrant fall color. Here’s how to sow and care for Kochia seeds:

Timing and Location: Sow Kochia seeds directly outdoors in spring after the last frost date. They can also be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost for an earlier start. Choose a sunny location, as Kochia thrives in full sun.

Soil Preparation: Kochia is adaptable but prefers well-drained soil. Prepare the garden bed by loosening the soil to a depth of about 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) and incorporating compost to enhance fertility and drainage.

Sowing: Sow the seeds directly on the soil surface and press them lightly into the soil. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light to germinate. Space seeds about 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart to allow for mature growth.

Moisture and Temperature: Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 7-14 days. Ideal soil temperature for germination is 70-75°F (21-24°C).

Thinning and Transplanting: If started indoors, transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and they have at least two sets of true leaves. Space the plants 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.

Care: Kochia is drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering is essential during the initial growth period. Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilization is not typically necessary, but a balanced fertilizer can be applied if growth is slow.

By following these guidelines and providing proper care, you can enjoy the striking appearance of Kochia plants in your garden.
