Ficus Bonsai Care

The Ficus is a real tropical plant with an Asian atmosphere. The Ficus is known for its branchy root and its full bunch of leaves. The Ficus is completely in her element if the soil is slightly moist at all times and is in a place with a lot of indirect light.

To water

The soil of the houseplant should be slightly moist, without creating a layer of water at the bottom of the pot. The plant is sensitive to root rot. It is therefore recommended to give small amounts per donation. It is only time for a new watering when the soil starts to feel a bit drier. Check the moisture of the soil regularly, especially in the beginning. This makes it clear how much water the flat needs. If the soil is still very moist after 6 days, the Ficus will receive too much water. In winter, the houseplant needs up to half as much water. So pay attention to this at this time of the year.

Spraying

Spray the Ficus regularly to get the dust off the leaves. This is also to prevent Spider mite (vermin). In winter, the Ficus also loves a spray. The air becomes drier because of the heated stove. So spray the houseplant a little more often in the winter.

light

The Ficus needs a lot of sunlight Or Indoor Bright Light. Five hours of direct sunlight a day is the ideal environment for this characteristic houseplant. This can be achieved by placing the plant two to three meters from the south-facing window or directly behind the north, west or east window.
When the plant is further from the window, growth will slow and dead leaves will be replaced less quickly.

In the beginning, place the plant gradually towards the window. This prevents leaf burn. This is because the Ficus is grown under controlled light and the transition to direct light can burn the leaves.

Maintenance

A Ficus can drop leaves when the light intensity is too low or after a relocation. Especially after purchase in winter, it happens that the plant loses leaves. In this case, do not water more than usual! Too much water can also lead to leaf loss. With a lot of leaf loss, it is recommended to place the plant a little closer to the window. Especially in the spring, the growth period of the Ficus, the plant will recover completely with good care.

A single yellow leaf is no cause for panic at all. If several leaves turn yellow and this also happens over a longer period, this can be a sign of exhaustion. In this case it is recommended to feed the plant extra.

Brown leaves can indicate too much or too little water. The reaction of the plant in both cases is the same because the roots slam shut. Therefore, check the ground carefully to find out which scenario applies.

Pruning

Prune the Ficus every autumn, or in between if the plant grows too large. This keeps the plant nice and compact without unsightly runners. Pruning in the fall ensures that sunlight can reach the crown in winter. Please note that a pruned ficus requires less water if a lot of leaves have been cut.
