House plants have quickly taken over instagram with people posting up their trendy interiors, urban jungles and huge monsteras! Trust me we’d know coming from a bunch of plant enthusiasts. But did you know that House plants actually have some great environmentally friendly qualities to them that’ll help reduce toxins around your home.

Believe it or not, but studies show that we spend up to 90% of our time indoors. Thats a lot of time inside and if you don’t have clean air resulting in being exposed to indoor air pollution, which is a big no no! Don’t be alarmed! There is a way to combat air pollution and toxins that build up in your home.

House plants are an excellent way to purify your home and make your space more refreshing and healthy for you. Below we have created a list of air purifying plants of all shapes and sizes to help you find the perfect frond.

Mini Bamboo Palm


The Mini Bamboo palms are a great option for plant lovers who are looking for something that is easy to take care of, looks great AND helps improve the air quality around them. The key to these little ones is to not put them in direct sunlight as they will start to bleach. However, parlor palms transpire a healthy dose of moisture into the air, making it a welcome addition in dry winter months. These plants are non-toxic. so they are perfectly safe for your pets and they help eliminate toxins such as Formaldehyde, benzene, Carbon Monoxide, Xylene, Chloroform and more.

Sansevieria 

The Sansevieria is a tough little succulent that is absolutely perfect for beginners who have no idea how to keep a plant alive. These little ones can survive tough conditions including a wide variety of temperatures. However, be careful not to over water them! This is the perfect plant for someone who very much lacks the art of taking care of a plant but still wants to reduce pollutants in their indoor spaces.


Chinese Money Plant

The Chinese Money Plant is one of the most desired plants on social media, with its coin shaped glossy green leaves that can be super easily recognisable. These plants are generally very easy to take care of as you only need to avoid direct sunlight and rotate the plant every second day. Even though this is one of the most popular plants on the internet, they still contribute to removing toxin's such as Formaldehyde and Xylene from your indoor spaces.  

Philodendron Birkin

The philodendron Birkin is a small but powerful little plant. As its leaves are also quite large for how small this plant is, it really does help reduce toxin's such as formaldehyde. These little plants are perfect for a bedroom or a study as they can help improve air quality whilst retaining their small size. They're also pretty easy to take care of as you only need to make sure they stay hydrated and have some nice indirect sunlight!


Philodendron Silver Sword

Philodendrons are wonderful air purifying plants and the Silver Sword variation is no exception! The Silver Sword's large leaves help inhale toxin's such as formaldehyde and eliminate them from your home! These plants are also a classic summer plant as it thrives in humid conditions, making it perfect for a larger room that might be more exposed to sunlight.

Rubber Plant Variegated

The rubber plant is one of the best indoor plants for removing formaldehyde from indoor air. This plant grows great inside and thrives in a temperature range of around 16°C to 27°C and can tolerate dim lighting. The trick for these is to avoid direct sunlight and keep an eye on them during dry hot conditions such as summer. Rubber plants are a super popular indoor plant that have some great air cleaning qualities to them.

Ficus Benjamina Starlight

The Ficus Benjamina Starlight is another fairly popular, low maintenance house plant that is a popular option for most people. According to NASA's Clean Air Study, the Starlight was effective at cleansing airborne formaldehyde, xylene and toluene. This plant is a low maintenance plant that needs good indirect light and only needs semi frequent watering. These plants also grow best in higher temperatures so they make an ideal plant for those hot and stuffy spots in your house.
