Plant Care

Watering

During summer, Water daily or when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. During Winter season water once in 2 days or when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. Keep the soil lightly moist at all times, but do not overwater as this will cause brown spots and leaf drop. Curly or dry leaves suggest, the plant is dry and needs watering. Water in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Always check your soil before watering.

Light

Bright indoor light or indirect sun. 6 hours to 8 hours

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 18°C - 24°C. Avoid draughts as these can create undesirable temperature fluctuations. Consider giving your plant an occasional misting twice every week to maintain the optimum humidity level.

Fertilizer

Apply liquid fertilizer once in 15 days when the plant is actively growing. For best results use Folikraft ready to use Indoor Plant Food.

Plant Bio

Bird of Paradise is a great indoor houseplant choice for filling a wide, tall well-lit space. It has a nice symmetrical shape and large oval-shaped canopy type leaves. Often referred to as the Banana plant, as the leaves do have a very similar shape to those of a Banana tree but a Strelitzia is a much harder choice to be kept as an indoor houseplant. The Bird of Paradise got it's name from the flowers that are produced from many varieties resembling the plumage of a bird called the Bird of Paradise. Most Strelitzia kept as houseplants do not bloom, some because of the variety, and some because indoor conditions just don’t provide enough light to trigger the plant to produce a bloom, so most are kept for their lush foliage.

The Bird Of Paradise looks & does the best with regular water – not too wet & not too dry. And not a few little splashes every now & then but a deep watering every couple of weeks in the hotter months. The Bird Of Paradise isn’t too fussy as to soil which is evidenced by the wide variety of places it grows in. It does prefer a loamy, somewhat rich mix however & needs good drainage. It would benefit from a generous top dressing of organic compost which would not only feed it but help to conserve moisture as well.
