Plant Care

During summer, Water daily or when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. During Winter season water once in 2 days or when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. Keep the soil lightly moist at all times, but do not overwater as this will cause brown spots and leaf drop. Curly or dry leaves suggest, the plant is dry and needs watering. Water in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Always check your soil before watering.

During summer season keep the plants in shaded area and during winter season plants can withstand direct/indirect light.

During summer season or when the temperature is above 45°C place the plant in shaded area. During winter season or the when the temperature is below 45°C the plants can be directly placed in direct/indirect sunlight.

Apply liquid fertilizer or slow release fertilizer once in 15 days. Always fertilizer the plants during the morning hours when the temperature is low. For best results use Folikraft ready to use Outdoor Plant Food / Flower Booster.

Plant Bio

Araucaria heterophylla, commonly known as Norfolk Island Pine or star pine, is a popular evergreen tree native to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific. Despite its name, it is not a true pine but belongs to the Araucariaceae family. Here's a description and care guide for Araucaria heterophylla when grown indoors:

Araucaria heterophylla features a distinctive symmetrical shape with tiered branches arranged in whorls around a central trunk, giving it a pyramidal or Christmas tree-like appearance.
The tree's foliage consists of stiff, needle-like leaves that are arranged in spirals along the branches. The leaves are typically dark green and have a glossy texture.
Araucaria heterophylla is often grown as a houseplant or ornamental tree indoors, where it can reach heights of up to 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters) over several years, although it grows much taller in its native habitat.
While mature trees may produce cones, it is uncommon for indoor specimens to flower or fruit.

Care Tips:

Sunlight: Araucaria heterophylla thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Place it near a window where it can receive several hours of indirect sunlight each day. Avoid exposing the tree to direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day, as it can scorch the leaves.

Temperature: Norfolk Island Pine prefers moderate temperatures ranging from 60°F to 70°F (15°C to 21°C). It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures in winter but should be protected from drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity levels around Araucaria heterophylla, especially during the winter months when indoor air tends to be drier. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water, or misting the foliage regularly.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely between waterings, as Norfolk Island Pine is sensitive to drought.

Soil: Plant Araucaria heterophylla in well-draining, acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. A mixture of peat moss, perlite, and pine bark works well for indoor cultivation. Ensure that the pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Fertilization: Feed Araucaria heterophylla with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer formulated for houseplants every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring through fall). Dilute the fertilizer to half strength to avoid overfeeding.

Pruning: Prune Araucaria heterophylla as needed to maintain its shape and size, remove dead or yellowing foliage, and encourage bushier growth. Avoid excessive pruning, as it can weaken the tree's structure.

Pest and Disease Control: Monitor the tree regularly for signs of pests such as spider mites, scale insects, or mealybugs. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation around the tree to prevent fungal diseases.

By providing proper care, Araucaria heterophylla can thrive as an attractive and low-maintenance houseplant, adding a touch of greenery and elegance to your indoor space.
