The Pinstripe Calathea, scientifically known as Calathea ornata, is a popular houseplant known for its striking foliage. It is native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil. Here is a description and care guide for the Pinstripe Calathea:
Description:
Leaves: The Pinstripe Calathea has large, elongated leaves with contrasting patterns. The upper side of the leaves has dark green coloration with thin, white or pink stripes running perpendicular to the leaf veins, resembling delicate brushstrokes. The undersides of the leaves are a rich purple hue.
Growth habit: Pinstripe Calathea plants grow in clumps and can reach a height of around 2 feet (60 cm) when mature. The leaves arise from a central stem, forming an attractive rosette shape.
Flowers: Although not the main attraction, Pinstripe Calathea can produce small, inconspicuous white or pale yellow flowers on long stalks. However, it is primarily grown for its foliage.
Care:
Light: Pinstripe Calathea prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as it can cause the leaves to fade or burn. Place the plant near a window with filtered light or in a well-lit area indoors.
Temperature: Pinstripe Calathea thrives in warm temperatures between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). It is sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (15°C). Protect it from chilly air and maintain a consistent temperature.
Humidity: Pinstripe Calathea requires high humidity to thrive. Provide adequate humidity by misting the leaves regularly, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a tray filled with water and pebbles. Grouping plants together can also help create a more humid microclimate.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil feels dry. Avoid allowing the plant to sit in standing water, as it can lead to root rot. Use room temperature water to prevent shocking the plant.
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix containing peat moss, perlite, and some compost or orchid bark works well. Good drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
Fertilization: Feed the Pinstripe Calathea every two weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer. Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength to avoid overfeeding. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the winter months.
Pruning: Remove any yellowing, damaged, or dead leaves regularly to maintain the plant's appearance. Pinch off any leggy stems to encourage bushier growth. Use clean and sharp pruning tools to avoid introducing diseases.
Pests: Pinstripe Calathea can be susceptible to common houseplant pests like spider mites and aphids. Inspect the leaves regularly for any signs of infestation, such as webbing or tiny insects. Treat pests promptly with organic insecticidal soaps or neem oil.
Propagation: Pinstripe Calathea can be propagated through division or stem cuttings. To divide the plant, carefully separate the clumps and ensure each division has several healthy stems and roots. For stem cuttings, take a cutting with a few nodes, remove the lower leaves, and place it in a moist potting mix.
The Pinstripe Calathea is an eye-catching plant with its unique foliage patterns. With proper care, including adequate light, humidity, regular watering, and occasional feeding, your Pinstripe Calathea can thrive and bring a touch of elegance to your indoor space.
