This cultivar of the white spruce (Pica glauca) is a dense, compact, cone-shaped, evergreen gymnosperm dwarf shrub with soft bright green foliage that grows 10-12' in 30 years. Grown for its foliage, the Dwarf Alberta White Spruce does best in a cool environment. Cold winters, cool summers, and good air circulation are the optimum setting. Will not perform at its best in areas of high heat and humidity, and is intolerant of air pollutants and salt spray. It prefers moist loam or alluvial soils in the full sun. It is tolerant of wet sites, wind, heat, cold, drought, and partial shade. This plant needs to be protected from strong winds.
Perfect for a short-term, table-top Christmas tree, this conifer may not come as a perfect pyramid, but it looks charming, especially when adorned with decorations, lights or tinsel. Try to keep it in a cool, bright room and move it outside as soon as possible after Christmas, where you can enjoy it for the rest of the year. It is currently around 45cm tall (including the pot) and has beautiful, blue tinged green, needle-like leaves. As it matures it will also produce oval, green summer cones that age to brown. A slow-growing, broadly conical, evergreen conifer is an excellent specimen tree for a small, sunny garden. Best in moist, well-drained, neutral to acid soil or ericaceous compost if you wish to keep it in a pot.
