Plant Care

Watering

Water once a week or when the soil starts to become slightly dry at the top. Keep the soil lightly moist at all times, but do not overwater as this will cause brown spots and leaf drop. Curly or dry leaves suggest, the plant is dry and needs watering. Water in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Always check your soil before watering.

Light

Bright indoor light or indirect sun. 6 hours to 8 hours

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 18°C - 24°C. Avoid draughts as these can create undesirable temperature fluctuations. Consider giving your plant an occasional misting twice every week to maintain the optimum humidity level.

Fertilizer

Apply liquid fertilizer once in 15 days when the plant is actively growing. For best results use Folikraft ready to use Indoor Plant Food.

Anthurium Plant Introduction

The Anthurium is a genus of flowering plants containing about 1000 species categorized under family . It is known by several common names are anthurium, lace-leaf, flamingo flower, and tail flower etc. The Anthurium originates from America, distributed from northern Argentina to Northern Mexico, also found in some parts of the Caribbean. Anthurium has brightly colored flower spathes and ornamental leaves, which come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. Its shiny heart-shaped “flower” is really a spathe or waxy modified leaf that flares out from the base of the fleshy spike or spadix where the tiny real flowers grow with shiny dark green foliage. For its resemblance to flame, the plant is also called the flamingo flower.

The Anthurium can reach up to a height of 1.5 feet. When caring for an Anthurium plant, moisture control must be given great emphasis. They do well in partial sun exposure or shade, if kept indoors it needs bright indirect light and it will not do well under low light conditions. A moderate temperature range between 25 to 30 degree celsius is required to have it flowering year along. A well-draining soil must be used for the plants, with young plants being planted in a mix that is not too coarse. Successive watering of the plant must have some drying out period in between, as the Anthurium prefers to dry out a bit. Pellets or liquid fertilizers can be used throughout the growing period. Long temperature fluctuations or drought must be avoided.

The anthurium makes for excellent decorative plants. If proper maintenance is given, the spikes can last a month or two, meaning your garden is always adorned with some blooms. Small flowers bearing inflorescence makes them ideal, having the female as well as the male structures. The ornamental leaves and bright color flowers of the Anthurium makes them every gardener’s delight.

WHAT TO DO?

Every plant has different type of light, feed and water requirements.
Most of the plants like moderate watering, let the couple of inch at surface dry before watering again.
Some plants require frequent feeding but most, once in a year, feed the plant at beginning of spring.
Repot the plant every couple of years in slightly bigger container.

WHAT NOT TO DO?

Avoid frequent watering in winters, it will kill the plant.
Avoid temperature shocks like taking it suddenly indoors or outdoors.
Avoid partial watering and use water sprayers to water equally in all directions.
Avoid repotting plants in large containers, most of the plants likes to be in groups.
Avoid over fertilizing, quantity depends on NPK ingredients but plants do need not more than a spoon.

COMMON UNDERSTANDING

Plants are living creatures require a little sensitivity towards them, following common instructions are helpful for keeping them happy:

Dig around the root zone with your fingers to a depth of 2-3' for small plants and water generously when the soil feels dry to the touch.
Use a balanced fertilizer i.e., 10-10-10, 14-14-14 (Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K)) food with micro-nutrients.
Be observant of the changes in plant vigor and growth, plants are more susceptible to disease and pests if they are weakened through poor maintenance.
It is good to make it a practice to inspect plants progress so you can spot systems of disease or insect infestations well in advance of any serious problem.
Pruning is required at times for plant health and aesthetics, as a general note remove the damaged leaves and branches as soon as those are noticed to avoid infections.
