Plant Care

Watering

Wet the seed starting mix. Push your finger into the soil to your first knuckle and make sure it is damp. Excess water should drain through.

Light

Indirect sunlight, 6 to 8 hours

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 18°C - 24°C. Avoid draughts as these can create undesirable temperature fluctuations. Consider giving your plant an occasional misting twice every week to maintain the optimum humidity level.

Fertilizer

Provide fertilizer once the first true leaves emerge. The first set of leaves that appear are known as the seed leaves. The second set of leaves are the first ‘true leaves,’ and a sign that your plant is getting mature and ready for serious growth. Dilute a balanced fertilizer to ¼ the strength recommended. Fertilize once in 2 weeks.

Product Bio

It’s a great idea to grow aniseed in a pot or container for your own small-scale herb garden.

Select a pot or garden box at least one foot (25 cm) wide and deep. Anything too small might tip over in case of wind.
Ensure it drains well with gravel or clay pebbles along the bottom, and a drainage hole in the pot.
Sow three to five seeds in three seed holes evenly spaced out.
When the seeds have sprouted and grown to about 4 inches (10 cm), thin down to a single plant per seed hole.

Note that aniseed grows to be a bit top-heavy. If set in a windy spot, stake and tie it or you’ll risk having it bend and topple over.

Although aniseed isn’t a very thirsty plant, it will grow best if you water it regularly, especially if grown in containers.

Subjecting it to drought might stunt the plant a bit, and might even lead to early blooming (called bolting). Since seeds are what is interesting to harvest for this plant, it isn’t much of a problem, unlike leaf veggies like lettuce and escarole.

Since aniseed loves rich soil, feel free to mulch. This will keep providing extra nutrients and also retain moisture, helping you avoid excessive watering.
